While everyone argues about social media algorithms, Nigeria’s oldest advertising channel has been quietly having its best years. At Clickideas, we have watched out-of-home advertising – billboards, transit ads, street furniture – record the fastest growth of any traditional media channel in the country between 2021 and 2025, compounding at 41 percent a year. It is the same principle behind building a brand Nigerians trust: be physically present where your customers live. In an age of ad blockers and skipped pre-rolls, a billboard cannot be swiped away – which is why our branding and signage services treat outdoor as a first-class channel, not an afterthought.
But the new research carries a warning for anyone planning a campaign, and it lines up with what we know about Nigerian buying psychology. Lagos absorbs roughly 73 percent of all outdoor advertising spend in Nigeria, yet it delivers the weakest returns of any city measured. Billboard visibility in Lagos is the lowest in the country, and it has the highest share of people who remember an ad but never act on it. The money is concentrated where the competition is fiercest and the audience most fatigued. We see the same pattern in digital – crowded channels, tired audiences, shrinking returns – and the answer is always smarter placement, not bigger spend.
The smart money looks beyond Lagos
The first-ever national study of outdoor audiences found that more than seven in ten Nigerians recall seeing an outdoor ad in the past month, and nearly three-quarters of those took a commercial action afterwards – most commonly talking about the brand or searching for it online. Outdoor is not wallpaper; it is a conversion engine feeding word of mouth and Google searches. That is exactly why we pair every billboard and branding rollout with search visibility work – the customer who sees your board on the expressway should find you instantly on Google. One channel creates the memory; the other captures the action.
The same study points to where the value sits, and it rewards the kind of strategic thinking we push our SME clients toward. Cities like Asaba, Enugu, and Onitsha hold some of the heaviest, most responsive audiences in the country. Market areas are visited weekly by eight in ten Nigerians, yet they account for barely a quarter of reported outdoor exposure – a gap that should excite any brand selling to real shoppers. And there is no single national formula: in Sokoto, three-quarters of commuters name market areas as their main outdoor environment, not roads. National brands that won big at this year’s marketing awards understood this – they met customers where they actually are.
The lesson for 2026 is simple. Outdoor advertising works, but the Lagos default is lazy planning. Spread the budget, follow the audience data, and design for memorability – the campaigns winning now are the ones people photograph, talk about, and search for.
